Aljazeera1

Inside Story, the popular Al Jazeera program, provides analysis and commentary on recent news stories. The Donald W. Reynolds University of Missouri School of Journalism and Aljazeera collaborated using the Quicklink TX Skype transceiver in order to produce content for the series.

As both establishments had a Quicklink TX they were able to easily communicate two way high quality audio/video over the public internet. This simple solution meant the Skype call from Missouri was available live over SDI in the Aljazeera studio.

TX workflow

Travis McMillen, Video Producer at the Reynolds Journalism Institute explains: “We’ve done 2 way calling with a couple of different cable channels in the past but the setup was always clunky. On this occasion I needed to offer Aljazeera a professional two-way video/audio solution using Skype”

Aljazeera achieved successful, issue free live programming. Travis enthuses that “having Quicklink in-house certainly puts us back on the cable-news-network-map”.

The Quicklink TX hardware is also now available with multiple Skype call options. For more information, please contact our sales department on +1792 720880 or email sales@quicklink.tv

The latest TX from Quicklink is a recently released solution that enables professional reception and transmission of multiple Skype video calls through multiple SDI interfaces. The Xstream is equipped with dual Xeon multi core processors allowing management of up to eight simultaneous full frame HD two way Skype calls.

The multiple incoming Skype calls can be queued and the studio can communicate with each caller or with a group of callers using Quicklink’s proprietary IFB return audio. The Xstream also offers the studio the ability to insert overlay graphics such as “on air” notification or a company logo on the return callers Skype video. Both IFB and overlay can be manually, GPI or API controlled.

The system is specifically designed for live transmission with both redundancy and resilience. The dual power supply, raided swappable front loading drives and system monitoring with alert notification via SMS/SNMP/email offers peace of mind.

The system is optimised to improve call quality including automatic or manual colour correction per channel. This is ideal when receiving Skype video from callers with poor background lighting setup. An auto fall back to a still image with continued priority to audio is another essential feature when using Skype in a professional environment.

The system supports both Dante/AES67 and NDI I/O, thus ensuring seamless IP workflow integration.

Eugene Ho, Partner Director of Product Management for Skype says: “We’re proud of our work with Quicklink to offer this flexible, scalable and cost effective solution that minimizes the control room footprint to broadcasters.”

Manoto TV, a Persian language TV channel broadcasting from the UK to Iran is run by the Marjan Television Company. Manoto TV is a commercial TV channel, consisting of acquired programming such as Downtown Abbey, Heroes, and in-house production like The One Show.

The channel integrated in their workflow two Quicklink TX transceivers for live news broadcasting and a daily magazine show. Operations Director Robert Le Merle explains;

“We were looking for a live video over IP management system and the Quicklink TX came at the right price. We wanted a professional broadcast Skype box that enabled us to split the audio and video as well as allow us to bring it on our talkback system.”

Manoto TV have been using two Quicklink TX’s with the Skype TX controller software to conduct three-way group conversations: The contributors can both talk to each other and to the presenter. The studio is able to manage the units from a single software interface. This is important for the producers who are able to talk to the contributors beforehand without going to broadcast.

Manoto TV are looking forward to using the Quicklink TX in the future in order to obtain comments from Persian speaking contributors who live in other countries such as USA, Sweden and other ex-pat communities. Robert clarifies,

“When we are talking about daily events, news or entertainment we want to get people’s opinions very quickly and in an easy way for getting the talent and expertise into the show. The Quicklink TX helps us to achieve that.”

“The Quicklink TX is very robust, which is what you want when using a specialist piece of equipment,” concludes Robert. “It’s a cost effective machine that delivers on its promises.”
